Martha’s inspiration
Channel: WOMAD
The wonderful Martha Wainwright took a few moment’s respite with t5m from the whirlwind of colour and bongo drums that is WOMAD festival.
Martha’s particular style of rock-tinged folk is influenced by the expressive vocals of female singers, and she tells us that she gravitates towards singers like ‘Edith Piaf and Dolly Parton, singers who are ‘emotive in their style’.
This is something that definitely comes through in Martha’s own songwriting and in her own distinctive singing style.
‘I guess a lot of the people that interest me were female singers who were very expressive in their singing style. It shaped the way that I sing’
Martha released her second solo album this year, and was performing at WOMAD, accompanied on the Sunday by beatboxing extraordinaire Shlomo. There are many more exclusive interviews with Martha and Shlomo on t5m.com.
