Malam Mamane Barka on his English welcome
Channel: WOMAD
Malam Mamane Barka was asked by t5m what he likes about England and WOMAD.
Barka was very enthusiastic about what he’d seen of England. “It is the first time we come here” said the Nigerien (native of Niger) artist. “It is a very beautiful country.” The contrast could hardly be bigger between the wet island of Britain and Niger, which is landlocked and dominated by the Sahara desert. Malam Mamane Barka was also very pleased with that he had seen of English people, saying “we see that people are trés accueillent (very welcoming).”
Barka was full of praise for WOMAD, which he sescribed as “a very, very big festival and very interesting.” He was also happy to see more than just the English. “I see a lot of countries, a lot of cultures of different countries and it is very beautiful” said the traditional musician.
