t5m had the exceptional privilege of some backstage chats at WOMAD festival with reggae legend and all-round lovely gentleman Eddy Grant.
‘What is being done here is laudable because it gives an opportunity for musicians from all different backgrounds and cultures to apply their trade’.
Guyanese born reggae legend Eddy Grant is a keen advocate of diverse offerings of music, festivals which combine music from many different cultures and genres. And WOMAD does this better than anywhere else.
The Electric Avenue singer proposed to us a kind of musical meritocracy, where all music has an equal opportunity, and it’s what people think of the music that defines its value.
‘WOMAD, and other organisations, should be challenging the status quo, so that all musics get an opportunity, based on what people think.’
What’s great about WOMAD is that musicians from ‘all different backgrounds have the opportunity to play in front of people who would not normally have the chance to see them’.
