So a travesty apparently occurred on Sunday night, depending on who you’re talking to the incident in question is either Manchester United loosing to Chelsea or the entity known as “Jedward” surviving in the X – Factor. Personally, I thought the bigger anger inducing moment came with Charlton’s loss to non league Northwich Victoria in the FA Cup, but that’s just me. So The X – Factor has again been responsible for causing the mass media to throw a hissy fit of epic proportions, as John & Edward collected more votes than Laura and were allowed to stay on the show. At least no one made a potentially offensive joke (although Louis Walsh did give the rude V - sign to the studio audience)

The main argument about the kids seems to be that they’re creepy, and they’re all together kooky. Also they sing worse than me, which, as anyone who has heard me sing will tell you, is pretty tortuous.

“But Simon Cowell had the chance to vote them out on Sunday night and didn’t? It’s a fix!” According to some people who don’t seem to quite understand two key points about the X- Factor.

Firstly, everybody lies, so when Simon said he would vote Jedward out as soon as possible, he probably wasn’t telling the truth.

Secondly, it’s an entertainment show intended for high ratings and collecting as much money off of the wider society (that’s us!) as possible before our short attention spans are captivated by the next new craze.

Such as the new Twilight movie or something that is both shiny and spinney.

Simon Cowell, for his entire music ‘mogul’ ability made his money in a very clever way. He took Robson and Jerome, at the height of their fame in TV show, Soldier Soldier and had them release a cover of “The White Cliffs Of Dover” just in time for VE Day.

The song was a fantastic success and, along with other questionable covers of songs such as Unchained Melody led to three albums and a greatest hits compilation from the duo.

Shortly afterwards, Simon also watched as his acts including Zig and Zag, Teletubbies and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers all had novelty hits as well.

Simon has since moved on to Pop Idol, Britain’s Got Talent, The X – Factor and their American counterparts to help make him one of the most successful men in world television.

With John & Edward, comparisons have already been made between them and Ant & Dec, who are the biggest light entertainment duo in Britain since Morecambe and Wise.

If Simon can turn John & Edward from X Factor contestants into a pair of TV personalities, (similar to former Pop Idol contestants Sam and Mark) then Simon can find himself in the lovely position of negotiating their contracts, holding exclusivity clauses and all other types of legal mumbo jumbo which ultimately means he makes even more money.

I have nothing against Simon Cowell; he is merely the lynchpin in this scenario and this is just the way the entertainment world works. Talent is easy to find, but turning the talent into a cash cow is the real trick.

So Jedward will remain in the competition for another week or few, greater furore will be caused as more spotlights are shone on The X Factor. The winner will inevitably gain the Christmas number one spot, and Simon Cowell and his fellow executives will celebrate another very successful year in the entertainment industry.

As for the rest of us, we can either accept that this is the way the world works and just get on with life as normal, or we can collectively do something about it and stop watching these programmes.

Incidentally the latter suggestion is the key reason behind the end of many classic shows including The Generation Game and Big Brother.

The choice is yours.
