If you’d told me on Friday morning that my weekend would include both toothpick moustaches and bad chat up lines I probably would have thought I would be spending a seedy evening at Los Locus. However, even though I did end up drinking in an underground bunker in central London my evening was more funny and holocaust filled than I would expect of a regular Friday night.
Comedian Richard Herring is in town with his Hitler Moustache tour. A strange title for a comedy show I’ll grant you but not only does he provide the jokes he gives a message. May sound twee for some but it’s not a message we don’t already know (i.e fascism bad, democracy good and BNP members are d*cks) it’s just a reminder to not be complacent. Oh and also that the moustache was Chaplin’s first and foremost and therefore belongs to him not old ‘one ball’.
It was delivered with insightful humour and observational storytelling about his time with his Chaplin/Hitler (delete where appropriate) moustache – yes he did grow one and the freebie Velcro moustaches at the end were also a genius giveaway. I thought my nose looked much more attractive with a welcome mat underneath it. Given the interesting and fairly controversial subject the gig revolved around, his material was spot on. A great mix of ridiculing racism, mickey-take out of the moustache and amusing anecdotes meant I didn’t just giggle all the way through but took away a desire to pay greater attention to politics (I figure I can read about it after I’ve caught up with Katie Price and Brangelina) and keep my voting finger on the pulse. Herring is obviously an intelligent guy with the power to use comedy to convey important points. Russell Howard I love you but yawn rape is a different kind of comedy -even if it does have the same take-this-home effect and I spend parties trying to stick my finger in my friend’s mouths! Plus it was a bargain, mainly as I didn’t buy the tickets! But I’m given to understanding it’s only a fiver if you book a group or 12 each. Go, laugh, learn and enjoy some facial fuzz.
So after a fairly high-brow comedy experience I downgraded my Saturday night for trashiness that is Take Me Out. For anyone who hasn’t caught the show its good old fashioned ITV dating which is exactly what a Saturday night in is made for. The perfect way to make yourself feel better about your single status by watching 30 mostly attractive but mostly dumb single girls judge mostly attractive but mostly dumb single guys. It’s almost on par with Man ‘O’ Man but it hasn’t quite reached its dizzying heights of entertaining trash.
Take Me Out has now become a sky plus favourite, although to be fair its repeated on ITV2 at random times throughout the week so hard to miss. When ITV believe in a show they make sure the rest of the world does too! It’s also a great game to play in your living room – if you say you don’t like judging people on TV then I call you a liar. Firstly hot fireman Jonathan got a yes from me until he went on about horses and the outdoors – clearly I’m not an active girl or I wouldn’t be watching the show in the first place I’d be spending my Saturday potholing in Devon or something. Second was too young, too shy, guy whose name I can’t remember – I turned my light off. Before some dude who I think loved musical theatre a bit too much to be on the show in front of 30 girls if you catch my drift. They were all followed by possibly my ideal man, tall, dark, Irish, totally gorgeous and slightly cocky Darren, ahh if only you had a proper job and didn’t work on a perfume counter I think we could have a future.
So to sum up, I spent one evening laughing and gravely agreeing that prejudice is wrong and my next evening laughing and judging people on sight. I really think I’ve grown as a person this weekend.

Brilliant article. I am yet to watch Take Me Out…it reminded me of Man Oh Man, which i used to love…. ( I was ten..)
I always try to stop myself laughing at people who put themselves on these shows…but it is irresistable!
Richard Herring sounds QUITE incredible too! Hilarious!
