t5m caught up with Russell Brand, The Fratellis and Ricky Hatton at the annual Silver Clef Awards lunch, which raises money for the music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins. We were there at the Park Lane Hilton, chatting with the stars about music, karaoke and obsessions.

The event was packed with the music industry’s finest and other charitable celebrities. The O2 sponsored annual lunch raises money for the music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins, which facilitates healing and therapy through music.

Britpop legends Oasis picked up this year’s coveted Silver Clef Award, which was presented by an over-the-moon Ricky Hatton.

Bryan Adams was honoured with the Hard Rock Ambassadors of Rock award, in recognition of his charity work.

Nordoff Robbins provides over 30,000 therapy sessions a year in this country, helping patients deal with trauma and disability.

The Fratellis were awarded Best British Band, and Glaswegian songstress Amy MacDonald scooped the Newcomer Award for her first album This is the Life.

Russell Brand had us under his spell with talk of vibrations, atoms and the Beach Boys. We also spoke to the utterly charming violinist Nicola Benedetti, who won the Classical Award, Simon Pegg, and of course, Jeremy Clarkson.

Talented violinist Nicola Benedetti talks about her first encounter with music therapy at the Silver Clef lunch, where she won the Classical Award.

The beautiful and talented young violin maestro Nicola Benedetti talks to t5m about her first encounter with music therapy.

The talented violinist, who was BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2004, has been playing since she was four!

She explains that she’s hugely aware of the power that music can have, with her own audiences and also in a therapeutic context.

‘Being a classical musician, and being very aware of the impact of music on the audience, and what actually happens, to all of us’. The work done by music therapy charity Nordorff Robbins has a personal resonance for her.

Benedetti remembers her first encounter with the idea of music being used in therapy. Learning about it at music school (Benedetti attended the Yehudi Menuhin School for young musicians), she remembers it ‘really hitting everyone and just being a really significant moment’.

Natt Weller told us about his dedication to the work done by Nordoff Robbins, which he’s been supporting since 2006.

Natt Weller told us about his dedication to the work done by Nordoff Robbins, the music charity he’s been involved with since 2006. t5m caught up with the intense goth-electro musician at the Silver Clef awards ceremony lunch.

‘I think that music is probably one of the most important medicines, it’s really good for healing’ he explained. From teenagers listening to music in their bedrooms to relieve adolescent angst, to the critically ill, disabled or traumatised, music has tremendous therapeutic power.

Natt is an advocate of music therapy and is a massive supporter of the work done by Nordoff Robbins.

Son of Paul Weller, Natt comes from good musical stock. He’s keen to carve out his own unique path though, and is a fixture on London’s alternative club scene. His own night Dangerous To Know at Soho’s Camouflage certainly attracts some inspiring characters.

As far as his own musical tastes, he is currently inspired by Roisin Murphy. The first album he ever fell in love with was Mars, by Japanese band Gackt. The album combines pop and with classical, electronic and operatic sounds. Singer Camui Gackt claims to be a 400 year old vampire. Not sure what kind of healing effect that album has on Natt!

Soul star Lisa Stansfield shares her musical inspirations and talks of her support for Nordoff Robbins at the Silver Clef lunch.

Lisa Stansfield is a Silver Clef lunch veteran. The British soul sensation is an ardent supporter of the annual Silver Clef charity event. ‘I’ve been coming to this for years’ she told us. ‘It’s an incredible charity; an amazing way to work with children who’ve got autism’.

Every year at the event, a film is shown profiling the work done by Nordoff Robbins and Lisa says that ‘everyone just cries!’

‘It’s so touching, it’s absolutely amazing’.

All Woman Lisa is inspired by the old soul greats, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Otis Redding.

Like any 80’s teen worth their salt, the first album she ever fell in love with was Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

Her top-rated artist of 2008 wold have to be Ms Winehouse, although she won’t be doing a karaoke rendition of Rehab anytime soon.

‘The only time I ever did karaoke, I was in Japan and I did All Around the World. It was amazing because they didn’t think it was me!’

British comic powerhouse Simon Pegg was singing the praises of Nordoff Robbins at the charity’s annual awards lunch.

‘I just think it’s a really great cause’ he told us. ‘I didn’t know I’d also be getting free things! That’s a bonus’.

He’s not just in it for the free goods. Simon’s wife Maureen has done a lot of work with the music therapy charity in Scotland.

She visited one of the hospice facilities there last year when she was looking after Paulo Nutini; ‘Maureen said it was really incredible’.

From charity on to the topic of the day, music.

His ultimate karaoke number? ‘Dancing Queen’ he answers with no hesitation. ‘Or The Message, Grandmaster Flash. I did it on Saturday!’

A big Pixies fan, Simon told us he’d choose Frank Black as his musical inspiration, and their album Doolittle is the first record he fell in love with. He also divulges that his current obsession, the thing he can’t leave alone, is his new iPhone. We’re jealous.

Amy MacDonald was presented the Silver Clef The Newcomer Award by Russell Brand in recognition of the massive success of her debut album.

Amy MacDonald was presented The Newcomer Award by Russell Brand in recognition of the massive success of her debut album. The indie, folky This is the Life has now sold over a million copies.

The young singer-songwriter talked to us at the charity lunch, and described her first hand experience of music therapy. ‘Luckily enough, last year I got to go to one of the primary schools in Edinburgh which is helped by Nordoff Robbins’.

‘It was brilliant, it was one of the best experiences of my life. I got to play a little mini-gig for the children there, and they were the best audience ever!’

That’s saying something, as the Glaswegian singer has performed for adoring audiences at T in the Park, The Isle of Wight festival and The 02 arena.

Amy says that having been to the school and seen the children and therapy work brings the cause much closer to her heart.

Fellow award winners Oasis, and fellow Scots The Fratellis were also at the awards, and were listed as ‘very inspirational’ by Amy. She also gets her musical kicks from old stuff like the Beach Boys and Bruce Springsteen; ‘I’ve journeyed back a way!’

Her favourite song of the year is Coldplay’s Viva la Vida, which Amy MacDonald and her guitarist have charmingly deemed as ‘bordering on genius’.

Jeremy Clarkson shared a few minutes and a few music recommendations with t5m at the Silver Clef awards lunch.

The awards occupy a special place in the motor maestro’s affections, for a pretty straightforward reason. ‘It’s a great lunch! It’s a great lunch, and people benefit’.

The outspoken presenter was showing his softer side, confessing to a penchant for ‘that blonde girl’, namely Welsh singer Duffy. This comes as a pleasant surprise from the man who doesn’t like anything recorded after 1978.

He’s also partial to a bit of Petula Clark at karaoke time. ‘Down Town. I was singing it only last week!’. It’s a mental image that will take some time to fade.

The Fratellis cancel Bilbao festival to attend the O2 Silver Clef charity lunch.

Scottish rockers The Fratellis are real softies at heart. Speaking with t5m at the Silver Clef Awards lunch, they revealed that they were supposed to flying out to a concert in Bilbao, but cancelled to attend the prestigious charity event in London’s Park Lane.

‘We’ve always been of the opinion that whenever someone asks you to do a charity event, it’s not something you even think about, you know’ explains Jon Fratelli, the group’s lead vocalist and guitarist.

‘You’d be a bit of an idiot if you didn’t do it!’ agrees bassist Barry Fratelli. ‘If our faces can help do anything, for any charity, we’re more than happy to help’.

The pair cite ‘lovable rogue’ Mince Fratelli, their elusive third band member, as their greatest musical inspiration. They concede that Oasis, winners of the afternoon’s 02 Silver Clef award ‘are alright as well’.

Bruce Springsteen cropped up in the iPod revelations of most of the stars we spoke to at the lunch. Jon’s current obsession is Springsteen’s The Seeger Sessions, whilst Barry told us he can’t stop listening to Elbow’s new album.

They band took their name from Barry’s mother’s maiden name, which was adopted by each member. The Fratelli fraternity begin their American tour this September.

Self-confessed ‘big, massive fan’ Ricky Hatton got to present his idols Oasis with the O2 Silver Clef award at this year’s lunch ceremony.

The boxer was thrilled to be involved with the charity event which raises money for Nordorff Robbins. ‘It’s what you do outside the ropes; events like this are as much a part of my job as anything’.

Hatton was ‘very, very happy’ to be presenting the coveted award to his all-time favourite band. ‘It feels very, very surreal to me, being a big massive fan’.

‘Hitman’ Hatton revealed he listens to Oasis in the changing room before he gets in the ring. ‘Oasis are a bit like me, they come off a council estate and they’ve done well for themselves’.

Continuing in this vein, his favourite karaoke tune is Wonderwall. ‘I’m terrible, I think everyone’s afraid of booing me!’. His biggest musical inspiration is… Oasis.

Talk about a die-hard fan!

Russell brand talks Mozart and quantum entanglement with t5m at this year’s Silver Clef awards.

Exuberant comedian Russell Brand was in fine form as he spoke to t5m at this year’s star-studded Silver Clef Awards. Brand was there to present The Newcomer Award to winner Amy MacDonald, following the success of her debut album ‘This Is The Life’.

Chatting with t5m at the lunchtime event at the Park Lane Hilton, Brand enthused about the merits of music therapy. ‘Ain’t it that Mozart’s music’s better than anyone else’s for that? I’m into it! Cos it means vibrations have some kind of significance, like how we’re just a vibration! Vibrations, you know, as the Beach Boys said, are good’.

Whilst Russell Brand’s excitement over vibrations isn’t all that surprising, the music therapy work done by Nordoff Robbins is pretty remarkable. The charity provides over 30,000 therapy sessions a year in this country, helping patients deal with trauma and disability by building connections and trust though music.

The O2 sponsored awards raise a phenomenal amount of money for the charity. This year saw Britpop legends Oasis receive the prestigious O2 Silver Clef Award, presented to the band by fellow Mancunian, boxer Ricky Hatton.
