Petra explained that the documentary is “a celebration of love, it looks at love from a pure level” and producer Leigh explains that ’Im really looking forward to exploring the science of love, talking to nobel peace prize winner, spiritualists and tribel leaders. Love is a force of nature”

During this exclusive interview, Nemcova gives us an intimate insight into her sheltered upbringing, closed off by the iron curtain, living in the communist Czech Republic. ‘I didn’t know about Stevie Wonder until five years ago; I didn’t know about Audrey Hepburn. I missed out on all these incredible things.’

Re-education aside, Nemcova has probably now experienced more than most girls can ever dream of. The Czech beauty talks through her career and how she rocketed to success after doing her first cover for the well known title Sports Illustrated.

But not everything has been a high, and Nemcova opens up about surviving the tsunami on Boxing Day 2004 which caused her pelvis to break in four places. However, it also spurred her on to set up her Happy Hearts Fund which is a proven charitable success and helps children all across the world.

She is clever, enchanting and maintains a sparkle true to her personality as she reflects on the fortuities that have been afforded to her in life, taking her from a small mining town in the Czech Republic to fast paced New York. ‘It’s a Cinderella story with a twist in it.’

As communism crumbled, the young Nemcova and her friends began to get their first taste of Western media. Fascinated with the models on the TV but lacking the self confidence herself, it took her best friend Camille, who entered her in a local talent contest, to help Nemcova realise her dream.

Years later, and a whole lot more the wiser, Nemcova understands that it’s not all about looks. ‘It’s not just about being beautiful, some of the girls are just really interesting. A lot of it is about their personality as well, being sociable, kind and respectful.’ But the real success stories in her eyes are the ones who not only possess the beauty, but the brains also, ‘They know how to take care of themselves, what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how to react’.

‘When I come to the party, there were like 15 different TV stations doing interviews and I was like, “Woah, this is really serious”.’

But the life of a model is not always the glamourous one that people portray it to be. Nemcova makes it clear that it is undeniably hard work; it can also be very lonely and the combination of both can be hard, especially when you start so young. ‘It’s a pretty fast school of life.’

But that school of life has obviously not left her looking through rose-tinted glasses and she is happy to admit that there are issues with size zero in the industry, and that although it unfortunately took the lives of a few girls to awaken people to this problem, she is nonetheless pleased that it is finally being addressed.

Nemcova calmly talks about what it was like growing up for her and many of the things that we all tale for granted, were a luxury or did not exist for this Czech girl before communism fell. ‘I didn’t know about Stevie Wonder until five years ago, or Audrey Hepburn. Looks like she has some catching up to do.

Nemcova truly believes in the power of the practice; that everything is made from energy and that you can influence it. She even attributes her speedy recovery post tsunami to it. ‘After the tsunami, I recovered after less than four months and some people, with the same injuries, took two years to recover. The doctors couldn’t believe it.’

She goes onto recount how in the space of a mere few days and a couple of CAT scans, her internal bleeding had been reduced to a mere few spots, which again left the professionals astounded. ‘When they were asking themselves what had happened, my sister was there and she was like “Oh, that’s just her energy thing”.’

However, Nemcova points out that through this tragedy came solace in the fact that it brought family and nations together. ‘Every experience has pluses and minuses.’

Though Nemcova herself survived, her boyfriend whom she was holidaying with at the time sadly did not but his memory certainly lives on. ‘The saying, “A day without laughter, is a day wasted” is from him and now, because of him, myself and his family lead much fuller lives.’

‘Happy Hearts Fund started helping countries which were affected by tsunamis but now we have gone to other countries, so we’re really spreading out. The mission of Happy Hearts is to help children who are suffering due to natural or economical or health related disasters.’

Despite her horrific experience, as soon as she was on the road to recovery, the first thing Nemcova wanted to do was to return to where it had all happened and try to help. What she saw in the aftermath of the event shocked her to her core and will stay with her for the rest of her life.

Turning a negative into a positive is Nemcova’s thing and she soon established her Happy Hearts Fund which continues to help children’s educational, medical and emotional needs.
