The elements of a song
Channel: Nick Morrison
Nick Morrison talks about the difficulties of songwriting. Talking about the intricacies of writing, he says “it is a craft.”
Lead singer and songwriter of Cass, Nick Morrison is now doing solo work, looking to release his debut album in the near future. However, he says that the idea many people have of artists, “where the song just bleeds out of them,” isn’t true for him. Morrison says “there are horrible, horrible moments… you’re desperate to… make this massive point… you can’t fit it into a nice melodic system.”
The difficulty for the musician stems from the complexity of his music. “I’m slowly realising it’s a balance between compromising your melodies with your structure, with your choruses, with your hooks, with your lyrical sentiment, and your rhymes and your metre and you just balance all these things.”
Nick Morrison has taken on this staggering task with a firm idea of what music should be. “It’s about having a song that will stand up lyrically, melodically, memorably and ideologically, and fight for itself” says Morrison.
