“Music has always been the main thing for me,” says musician Nick Morrison. As the lead singer and songwriter with Cass, he has yet to release his debut album but is certainly a rising talent to watch out for. Obsessed with the guitar, he confesses, ever since he got one at the age of 11, he grafted hard to learn his songwriting craft, by howling his way through Oasis, as he puts it, and learning how to play his musical heroes’ songs.
Now working with the Hoosiers’ producer and former keyboardist with Jamiroquai, Toby Smith, Nick is honing his songwriting skills and working on his first release. “It’s a struggle and a balance of compromises”, he says of the process of writing his music, and explains that the delicate matching of melody with lyrics and rhythm is part of making his songs stand up memorably.
Besides his own tunes, though, part of his set embraces his reinterpretations of other musicians’ songs, including his take on Mack The Knife, the number from the Brecht and Weill musical, the Threepenny Opera, made famous by jazz legend Louis Armstrong. “I love covering songs,” he confesses, but then adds, “You should only do covers if you can add something interesting and new to them.”
While working on his record and promoting his music live and on MySpace, he also finds time to support Avert, the UK-based HIV Aids charity.
