Read a list of the films people are most likely to lie about watching

Nick Clarke admits he is yet to watch Music and Lyrics, surely an essential for any film buff?

In a recent survey commissioned by Orange, in association with Orange Wednesday, it was revealed that - shock! horror! - people sometimes lie about the films they have seen….especially if someone from Orange collars them in the street and asks them what films they’ve lied about seeing.

Dirty Dancing, Taxi Driver and Gone With The Wind are all in the top ten, while 1 in 5 people have apparently lied about seeing the 1972 masterpiece The Godfather. The reason for doing so is unclear (Dirty Dancing?) but it got me thinking about those films that I probably should have seen, possibly never will never see, but if someone asked me…well, I might just say I have. Why? Because I’m just so, so ashamed!

Discounting all the world cinema that has so far slipped through the net, here are my top ten movie blanks:

Ben Hur

Casablanca

High Noon

The Magnificent Ambersons

Schindler’s List

Psycho

The Big Sleep

Toy Story

Ferris Beuller’s Day Off

The Blues Brothers

Oh, and…Music and Lyrics

I don’t think I’d lie about seeing any particular film unless I was talking to some minor actor or actress and s/he asked me if I’d seen the one s/he’d starred in. Then I might say, “Of course, you were wonderful!” Otherwise, why lie? Might be a topic of conversation and a suggestion of something to do… “You’ve never seen Schindler’s List? Well, let’s rent it right now!”

Guilty of some of the ones you listed… Psycho, Casablanca, Schindler’s List, High Noon…

I’m proud to say that in the last two weeks I FINALLY watched my first Hitchcock movie (Rear Window), my second Hitchcock movie (Vertigo), AND Citizen Kane, so I’m on a bit of a roll.

Others I tend to lie about: The Godfather series, Gone With the Wind (seriously, it’s like 4 hours long, cut me some slack), The Graduate, Pulp Fiction, Braveheart, and every year I lie about having seen all the Best Picture nominees (unless it’s something completely random like The Reader, in which case I don’t bother). It took me until the September AFTER the Oscars to finally see The Departed after I spent all awards season telling all my friends how it should win (who, by the way, had all seen it).

Wow, this is becoming quite the confessional. Don’t tell anyone.
