Martha Wainwright has recently followed up her performance in Will Tuckett’s Seven Deadly Sins at the Royal Opera House with a collabortaion with Christopher Wheeldon’s Morphoses company.

The new ballet, Tears of Saint Lawrence, with music by Ms. Wainwright and choreography by Wheeldon and Edwaard Liang, had its world premiere in New York’s Central Park last month.

The tears of St. Lawerence are traditionally known as the meteor showers that may occur on St. Lawerence’s Day.

“In both voice and music, her span includes country and blues; and her singing has sometimes a chesty blues intensity, sometimes youthful country innocence, with ascents into falsetto half-voice … This is singing that relies on a marked use of mannerism. But it’s also real singing, in which the voice itself, musically, is often very affecting,” reports The New York Times.

“Charmingly assured and no-nonsense, the blond Ms. Wainwright delivered song upon song. When she was not leading her musicians in her own songs, she led them in number ranging from Vaughan Williams to Annie Lennox.”

The ballet ended with Ms. Wainwright and the dancers each extending an arm diagonally to the sky, holding a star.

Martha Wainwright talks about her famous family, performing and wanting to be a popstar

As one part of one of the most renowned musical families in the world, Martha Wainwright’s folk-rock, acoustic music has seen her contribute tracks to films including ‘Tower Of Song’ in Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man and ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ in The Aviator , as well as release three albums and numerous EP’s.

Speaking exclusively to t5m, Martha tells us how she always ‘wanted to be a popstar’ but has found herself ‘trapped in a folksy world’, as well as what it was like growing up with her musical parents, Kate McGarrigal and Loudon Wainwright III. Noted for her expressive and emotional performances, Martha also explains how despite performing being a particularly draining aspect of her career it is worth it because of ‘what you get back from the audience’.

A compelling and personal interview with one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our generation.

Martha Wainwright set to reprise her role in The Seven Deadly Sins

Martha Wainwright is set to reprise her role performing Will Tuckett’s interpretation of the Seven Deadly Sins with The Royal Ballet at The Royal Opera House.

Written by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht in 1933, the performance was intended as a ’sung ballet,’ in which a singer and a dancer portray two sides of the same woman.

Martha naturally took to the stage in 2007 as the singing character of the ballet’s protagonist Anna - the chanteuse whose hard-headedness is countered by the vulnerable dancing Anna, played by Zenaida Yanowsky.

The Times wrote how Martha’s was a ‘plucky performance in which she reveals unexpected skills as an actress.’ You can bet this time around that she plans to win more plaudits, from fans and critics alike.

From 31st January to 21st February, she will appear alongside Zenaida in six performances, as part of The Royal Opera House’s Three Short Works programme. Ever supportive of the Wainwright clan, t5m will bring you more news on Martha’s latest maverick endeavour, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.
