Where The Wild Things Are – a video game that you would presume is an adaptation of the book or recently released film. Or is it? Apart from the inclusion of the Wild Things themselves, this has very little to do with the source material. In fact, make that hardly anything.
If you are aware of the plot of Where The Wild Things Are, then you would know that it is somewhat lacking in action, and making a video game of it would be a tall order by any accounts. Having said that, the mind boggles as to why this has been released, with nothing in common with the original story at all. You play the role of Max, a young boy who arrives on an island where The Wild Things live. Finding their village, he then embarks on an adventure that is best described as a cross between a platform game and a puzzler. The game never really explains why Max is on this island in the first place, and the lack of plot is almost comical. It’s a random collection of scenes strung together in the hope that it makes sense to someone. It certainly has sod-all to do with the film!
Simplistic, easy game play quickly becomes repetitive, and after a while you lose interest in the whole thing. Game play is awful, graphics are appalling, but on the plus side it does have nice sound effects. Oh well, at least there’s a plus side!
This is a kid’s game, for sure, but just not a very good one. And I know that for a fact; my six and eight year-old neices played this title, and they ended up getting bored after about half an hour of play. Being the hardened reviewer that I am, I lasted a bit more, and completed it after a few hours, however I can say for sure that things didnt improve over time. Give this one a miss and watch the film instead: it’s far more satisfactory.
