I’ve always had champagne tastes but on a Bucks Fizz budget and dreamt one day of owning an original designer dress. So when I heard that the likes of Jodie Kid, Trinny Wodall and Yasmin Le Bon were selling their unwanted designer garments at the Selfridges Really Really Great Garage Sale, and in aid of charity, Mothers4Children, I knew I had to postpone my lazy Sunday.
Armed with shopping bags and equipped with a bottle of water, hat, scarf and gloves, I joined the queue of 300 plus people.
After nearly developing hypothermia last February while in line for three hours at the Look Magazine Fashion Swap I knew to come prepared. Keeping myself entertained people watching, critiquing outfits and ashamedly listening to the conversation behind me for an hour I reached the front of the queue.
I exchanged my crumpled fiver for a red wristband and was directed to the first floor.
I was immediately transported back to my childhood, visiting the local school jumble sale, but only better, with high end designer garments at less than half price, retro music in the background and adult refreshments.
Spoilt for choice with row upon row of stalls I headed in the direction of the hordes of people that had gathered at the back of sale only to stumble upon a brand new leather studded waistcoat with fringing for £100.
As well as a red Roland Mouret dress worn by Davina McCall, Jimmy Choo shoes in their box, a Chloe trouser suit, which looked hardly worn, and Balenciaga boots donated by Gwyneth Paltrow, all at high street prices.
I was also pleased to see Yasmin Le Bon and Tamara Beckwith lending a helping hand, with Ms Beckwith helping to drum up sales on her own stall.
After spending a good few hours fighting my way through the crowds of people and snapping up all the bargains enough was enough and I made my way home.
