Last night I went to see the Greenpeace film about the Kingsnorth Six, A Time Comes, directed by Nick Broomfield. My friend, Nick Laird Clowes composed and sang the music, which of course was brilliant. It was hot in the screening room of the Westbourne Studios, almost unbearable, and some people were forced to stand. I sat next to a very attractive man in leather, which was slightly distracting; he had an equally attractive friend and they spoke something that wasn’t English - Russian? I couldn’t quite hear as they spoke in hushed, intense whispers. For one silly moment, I wondered if they were talking about me. The film highlighted the bravery and humor of the six who climbed to the top of the 220 meter tower laden with supplies including pasta and paint. They were demonstrating against the government decision to build a new coal-fired powerstation, the first in thirty years. Kingsnorth belches twenty tons of C02 into the atmosphere every day, which is the equivalent apparently of what the 25 least offending countries also release into the atmosphere a day combined. Makes you think. The five who were interviewed were funny, light, but very serious as well. The one girl said that when she was scared and in pain and hot on the long climb up she kept repeating pasta and then Paris, as she was looking forward to going there the following weekend and hungry for the pasta.( They all said that the pasta meal they had at the top was the best meal they had ever eaten.) Nick Broomfield told me that the five (one was riding a bicycle in Africa during filming) had been very nervous the night before the shoot, so he took them to the pub and helped them relax. They seemed very relaxed and at ease in the film. They were arrested after climbing the tower and a year later taken to court accused of causing £30,000 worth of damage, as they had managed to write GORDON, down one side, but hadn’t at time to finish. I can’t remember what they meant to write after Gordon, but in a landmark case managed to get off as the jury felt they had a right to protest about the governments apparent lack of concern over climate change. This is a rally to arms, we can all do our bit however small to make the government listen. Direct Action is heroic and necessary. According to one of the Kingsnorth six, Britain is partly responsible for the trouble we are in now, as we started the industrial revolution (I know this is a bit of a generalization) and other countries are likely to follow our lead.
