“I actually ended up acting through another love of mine which is horseback riding.” An equestrian from an early age, Kate Bosworth began acting at 13 after auditioning at an open casting call for a role that required authentic horseback riders. The film was Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer (1998).“It was very scary actually as a child. I found myself being in this situation and thinking ‘I’m not sure this is what I want to do’…but I’m so glad I ended up doing it because one love segued into another…”
Although she moved around with her family growing up, Kate returned to her birth city of Los Angeles in 2001 to pursue acting. Her first big break came with 2002’s Blue Crush, a film which required an 18-year old Kate to immerse herself in Hawaii’s surfing culture. “I felt so dedicated to making that character as real as possible,” she explains. “I lived, ate, breathed surfing for about six months on the north shore of Oahu.” Positive reviews helped win her leading roles opposite actor Kevin Spacey in films such as Beyond The Sea and Superman Returns. “Every time I see Kevin Spacey’s performance in [The Usual Suspects] the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. It was a defining moment for me seeing that at 15 because I thought ‘This is why I want to make films.’”
Now 24, her new projects include Laundry Warrior with actor Geoffrey Rush, as well as the film adaptation of Paolo Coelho’s bestseller Veronika Decides to Die and the supernatural thriller After.Life. Having recently bought the film rights to Catherine Hanrahan’s novel Lost Girls and Love Hotels Kate is to try her hand at producing this story of a young girl seeking to escape into Tokyo’s exotic nightlife. That’s not forgetting her fashion muse status and much-copied, forward-looking personal style – which includes her support of Global Green, an environmental charity.
