The world of Twilight has certainly been a roller coaster ride lately. Last week gave us the glorious highs of Comic Con. This week dealt the crushing blow that the role of Victoria had been recast. According to Mark Malkin of E! Online, Summit and Rachelle Lefevre are no longer issuing public statements, rather allowing their lawyers to hash things out behind closed doors. But just because the major players’ lips are sealed, that certainly doesn’t mean the controversy is over.

Twilight fans have long identified themselves by their team, be it Edward, Jacob or Switzerland. This team mentality has often flowed over into other saga issues such as directing changes and the possible recasting of the role of Jacob Black for New Moon. But what we’re seeing in the fandom now genuinely surprises me. While Summit and Rachelle may be holding back, the gloves have certainly come off among the fans.

It seems to me that the casting change for Victoria has produced the same thing she created in Eclipse, an army of ruthless newborns. Newborn vampires are driven by their emotions and desires. They are difficult to control and frequently fight amongst themselves. Some of the well-intentioned supporters on both sides of this issue have become nearly rabid in their responses. I’ve seen site owners verbally attacked, vicious rumors posted anonymously, and some downright nasty personal insults slung. It’s disheartening.

When all is said and done, we are Team Twilight. Summit is making business decisions. Whether we agree with them or not, we have a lot to be thankful to Summit for. They went out on a limb when they were a struggling studio to bring our beloved characters to life. We owe all the actors an incredible debt of gratitude as well. They have proven over and over again that they “get” these characters and love them as much as we do. And where would we be without the fan sites?

The thing that sets the Cullen clan apart from most vampires is their self control. We are all entitled to express our own opinions, but let’s try to do so with class and decorum. Let’s show each other some respect, and as I said yesterday, play nice. If the vampires and the werewolves can call a truce, why can’t we?
