This year's Royal Institution Christmas lectures come from Professor Sue Hartley of Sussex University

The Royal Institution Christmas Lectures were started in 1825 by Michael Faraday who gave 14 of them himself. He wanted to give children some formal education which was sadly lacking at the time. The Lectures have been inspiring children and adults ever since. This year's Lectures are given by Prof. Sue Hartley of Sussex University , an ecologist specialising in the study of plant-animal interactions, and are entitled "The 300 million year war".

The 300 million year war with Prof Sue Hartley

Prof Sue Hartley will show plants in a completely different light. She says plants are "complicated, cunning, beautiful and with plenty of tricks up their sleeve. And what's more, we humans are dependent on them in ways you'd never imagine. As well as much of our food, our drugs, medicines and materials are all by-products of this epic 300 million year war. "

As usual, this years Lectures are sold out but there are often seats available in the historic Library to watch the live feed. The Lectures will be televised on More 4 at 7pm on 21st - 25th December and available on DVD next year. I watched the first Lecture in the Library. It was done as a recorded television show with mistakes re-shot as they went. The Lecture was also stopped for commercial breaks to be added. This was slightly annoying but probably fascinating for the many young students and adults watching and taking part in the Faraday Theatre. The students included a party of 8 young women and 2 young men from different secondary schools in South Australia, all here as Maurice de Rohan Scholars for the series of Lectures, accompanied by 2 teachers. There is a similar party from South Africa n schools .

Ri Australia was opened in Adelaide, South Australia in October 2009. The Director of the Ri GB, Baroness Susan Greenfield CBE, was voted Honourary Australian of the Year in 2006 and has been Thinker in Residence in Adelaide twice, appointed by the Premier of South Australia, The Hon. Mike Rann MP.
.
The Lectures:
• Plant wars - 5th December
• The animals strike back - 8th December
• Talking trees - 10th December
• Dangerous to delicious? - 12th December
• Weapons of the future - 16th December

Details of the Lectures can be found at

www.rigb.org

The lectures will be televised on More 4 at 7pm on 21st December.

At this year's British Independent Film Awards we caught up with the stars of British cinema from both in front and behind the camera.

Andy Serkis, told us that while public consensus may be that British film has 'had it', events like the BIFAs raise the profile of British talent and prove to the world that it's a youthful, enthusiastic and dynamic. He is joined by both Jason Isaacs and Noel Clarke in his sentiment, that awards like the BIFA's are vital to promoting British talent, in an increasingly difficult market.

The British Independent Film Awards are the holy grail of any self-respecting cinema fan or movie buff - celebrating the achievements of independent British film making for the last 12 years. And of course, this year was no different!

Hosted by James Nesbitt, the event was crammed full with British cinema's most established stars and most promising newcomers, proving to the world and beyond that British film is coming out fighting against the recession.

Daniel Day Lewis wins the Richard Harris Award at BIFA 2009 for Outstanding Contribution to British Film by an Actor

Daniel Day Lewis paid homage to Richard Harris at this year's British Independent Film Award, as he was presented with the Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Film by an Actor.

Richard Harris, perhaps most recently known for his role as Professor Dumbledore in Harry Potter is widely regarded as a genuine and timeless star of cinema, and Daniel Day Lewis seemed suitably humbled and honoured to be chosen for the award. The Richard Harris Award will seek to recognise those whose careers have contributed widely to cinema, and who embody the festival's independent spirit, and with a career which includes There Will Be Blood and the recent release Nine, we couldn't agree more with the BIFA jury's decision.

Talking to us at the close of ceremony, the team told us how proud they were to see their British Sci-film film that no one can believe is British win such a prestifious award. Not only that, but the team also explained how difficult it was to coordinate a shooting schedule with the schedule of their leading man, Sam Rockwell who they describe as having ' a certain price'!

Jason Isaacs lends his support to British cinema at The British Independent Film Awards 2009

Jason Isaacs was one of the numerous British film stars who showed their support for the BIFAs this year, and we caught up with him on the red carpet to talk films and Harry Potter.

Praising BIFA for it's work in tirelessly promoting British film which would otherwise be swallowed up by big budget Hollywood films, Jason also points out the differences between Hollywood cinema, which tends to be more escapist, and the realism and empathy of British independent films. And while he admits this is a bit of a generalisation, we are inclined to agree.

Having worked on both indie films and big studio numbers, Jason describes British cinema as the 'meat and potatoes of his career'.

Praise indeed!

Discovered whilst arguing with her boyfriend in a train station, Katie Jarvis went on to play the role of Mia in Andrea Arnold's critically acclaimed Fish Tank - and was the well deserved winner of the 'Most Promising Newcomer' award at the 2009 British Independent Film Awards.

Katie tells us how the award 'means everything' and that it will 'give her the boost' to carry on acting and achieve her dreams. She also, rather humbly, tells us that she never thought she would win her category, which saw her up against Hilda Peter for Katalin Varga, Christian McKay for Me and Orson Welles, George McKay for The Boys are Back and Edward Hogg for White Lightnin'.

Quite an achievement!

Sam told us how she was up against strong competition in all of her categories, and that they were all hoping they would be victorious! Although Sam lost out to Duncan Jones in her category, Anne Marie Duff walked away with the Best Supporting Award for her role in the John Lennon biopic.

Sir Michael Caine wins the lifetime achievement Variety Award at The British Independent Film Awards

As one of Britain's most respected and revered actors, Sir Michael Caine was last night honoured with a lifetime achievement award at The British Indepedent Film Awards.

Speaking to t5m, Sir Michael explains how happy he is that he's 'still around to pick up' his lifetime achievement award, and even more happy that he is being honoured by the British Independent Film Awards, having just completed two independent films, Harry Brown and Is Anybody There?

Sir Michael tells us that he regards Harry Brown as one of his best performances, where he managed to make both the actor and the acting disappear. But don't expect to see him starring in anything so dark and moody for a while, as Sir Michael also tells us how desperate he is to get this teeth stuck into a comedy script - following his well received star turns in comedies such as Without a Clue.

In a year that British independent film shone, The British Independent Film Awards honour Sir Michael Caine and Daniel Day Lewis.

Set up in 1998, The British Independent Film Awards aim to celebrate merit and achievement in independently funded British film, both to honour established British talent, and to promote emerging stars to a wider audience.

This year's awards are held at The Brewery in Central London, and the extensive list of nominees documents what an incredible year British independent cinema has enjoyed - with Sir Michael Caine announced as the recipient of the prestigious Variety Award, celebrating his career which has spanned a staggering five decades; coinciding with his lead role in this year's Harry Brown.

Daniel Day-Lewis will be honoured with the Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contributor to British Film by an actor, and is described by the BIFA jury as 'one of the most exceptionally talented and enigmatic actors in the industry'.

Debate has been rife as to who will be crowned victorious by the BIFA jury, with Katie Jarvis, Emily Blunt, Abbie Cornish and Sophie Okonedo competing for the Best Actress award. The Best Actor category is equally hotly contested, with Aaron Johnson, Andy Serkis, Peter Capaldi, Sam Rockwell and Tom Hardy all up for nomiantion - fingers crossed that it goes to Peter Capaldi for his screen-stealing performance as Malcolm Tucker in In the loop.

Equally hard to predict is the Best British Independent Film category - with An Eductation, Fish Tank, In the Loop, Moon and No Where Boy...

This year has also seen two new additions to the BIFA jury, including Production Designer Kave Quinn and Actor/Director / Writer Nick Moran, along with the existing jury of Jodie Whittaker, Actors Idris Elba, Liam Cunningham, Eddie Marsan and Actor/Director/Writer Peter Mullan, Directors Sarah Gavron and Eran Creevy, Producers Dixie Linder, Anita Overland and Adrian Sturges, Documentary Filmmaker Kate Blewett, Film Marketing Consultant Robert Mitchell, Projectionist Paul Speed and Head of Distribution and Exhibition at The UK Film Council Peter Buckingham.

Of course, t5m will be at the BIFA Awards this Sunday evening, so stay tuned for all the red carpet outfits, gossip and exclusive interviews with the A List guest list and nominees.

With Christmas rapidly approaching, 33 days and counting, and the threat of Xmas shopping looming, I took a trip to the Winter Wonderland at London’s Hyde Park in association with Help a London Child to help me get into the festive spirit of things.

Forget going to Lapland this Christmas when you can visit Winter Wonderland at London’s Hyde Park in association with Help a London Child.

The outdoor event is even bigger and better then last year spanning across 20 acres and offering visitors the chance to see Zippos Christmas Circus and the Palace of Grand Illusion show both inside a heated big top.

Entry to the outdoor event is free. Visitors pay for the many attractions Winter Wonderland has to offer including Capital FM’s giant wheel, the Xmas roller coaster and a session on the park’s ice skating rink.

While there is a wide selection of drinks and snacks on offer such as Cherry flavoured mulled wine, numerous German beers, Bratwursts and hog roast sandwiches but they come with a hefty price tag. Expect to pay around £3 for a cup of soup or corn on the cob.

The park is divided into different areas; there is the German Christmas market with over 50 stalls selling traditional hand crafted gifts, delicious sweets and jewellery. I was particularly taken with the designer cookies, ‘Just Married’ and ‘Please Stay with me’ that looked almost too good to eat. Then there's the Bavarian village where visitors can enjoy refreshments inside a traditional log cabin and Mistletoe Avenue, Giant Wheel Plaza and Serpentine Road, where all the rides are situated.

The outdoor event offers thrills for all ages. There is Santa Land for younger visitors where they can visit Father Christmas and enjoy gentle rides and attractions such as the North Pole Slide, the Chimney Challenge and Present Pile Up. For the grown ups there is the Black Hole, which unfortunately was under repair on launch night, the Xmas roller coaster and the Power Tower, a 66m drop ride, not recommended for the faint hearted or anyone who has over indulged on hotdogs or alcoholic drinks . And for those who enjoy something a bit tamer there are the traditional fairground rides including the high flying swings, ghost train and hall of mirrors

For a panoramic view of Hyde Park and a great way to end the night take a ride on Capital FM’s giant wheel. For £7.50 you can take a trip in your own heated pod and compete to see who can spot the most landmarks across London.

The Winter Wonderland is open from the 21 November-3 January 2010 and from 10am-10pm.

Read about Danni Minogue's honour at the Cosmoplitan Awards 2009, along with other celebrities.

The Cosmopolitan Awards were in full swing last night at London's Whitehall, where the creme de la creme of lovely lady celebrities sauntered onto the red carpet. Danni Minougue, Kimberley Walsh, Alesha Dixon, Sarah Brown, Denise Van Outen, Lacey Turner, and Pixie Lott (and breathe!) were only some of the stars that were honoured at the awards ceremony that was hosted by the always fashionable Fearne Cotton.

The fashion choices were pretty much a mixed bag, but Sarah Brown, the wife of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, took our breath away. Hardly recognisable, the first lady wore a shimmery grey floor length dress with a neckline cut down to there (yes, down to there!). She topped it off with a sea-green wrap and a gold bracelet...we love!

X-factor judge, Danni Minogue, was named 'Ultimate TV Personality of the Year 2009', and we gave her a thumbs-up for her black assymetrical mini dress and her fingerless glove, which gave her outfit that extra oomff. Girls Aloud singer, Kimberley Walsh, was elegant in a backless floaty white gown with gold sequins, and hair swept to one side. She was voted 'Ultimate Woman's Woman' by Cosmo readers, and she definately looked the part! Newly pregnant, Denise Van Outen, played it cool in a printed shift dress and black leggings. Black was a definite theme throughout the evening!

Other winners of the night included: Holly Willoughby, named Ultimate TV Presenter, EastEnders star Lacey Turner, named Ultimate TV Actress; and ex-EastEnders star Brooke Kinsella, honoured as the Ultimate Celeb Who Made Us Care for her campaigning against knife crime following the death of her brother Ben. Gavin And Stacey star Ruth Jones was named Ultimate Funny Woman, cricketer Andrew Flintoff was given the award for Ultimate Man of the Year.

Gok Wan hosts last night's Stonewall Award with Jan Moir, Stephen Gately and Father John Owens all receiving awards

Gok Wan hosted the gay right's charity Stonewall Awards last night at the V & A, which was opened by Stonewall's Chief Executive Ben Summerskill who spoke about the recent homophobic attack against policeman James Parkes. Ben also took the opportunity to criticise the ever-controversial Section 28 legislation which banned the teaching of homosexuality in schools, saying:

If any government tries again to introduce a piece of legislation as offensive and demeaning as Section 28, Stonewall is here and we will fight back.

The evening then continued with the likes of Joan Bakewell and Johann Hari being awarded 'Journalist(s) of the Year), and Channel 4 news reporter, Samira Ahmed winning 'Broadcast of the Year' for her documentary of the practice of 'corrective rape' of lesbians in South Africa. The Sports Award of the Year went to motorbike racer Michael Hill, and Boyzone won Entertainer of the Year, with Stephen Gately's husband Andrew Cowles collecting the award to a raptuous applause.

Perhaps inevitably, Daily Mail columnist Jan Moir shared the dubious honour of 'Bigot of the Year' following her column on the death of Stephen Gately, with Father John Owens who this year asserted the claim that 'most paedophiles are gay'.

The biggest award of the evening, Hero of the Year was saved until last, and went to Rev Scott Rennie, the gay man who was appointed as minister of Queen's Cross Church, Aberdeen.Rennie's ordination was opposed by many because he lives with another man, but his congregation overwhelmingly selected him as their minister.Rennie said,'Thank you very much. I am deeply humbled to receive this'. He also paid tribute to his congregation, thanking them for their support.

The London Games Fesitval garners more creativity than every gallery combined.

October sees the return of the London Games Festival. From the 21st to the end of the month, London will bulge with events aimed at educating and exploring the world's most popular pastime. OK, the world's second most popular pastime.

Alright, one of the world's most popular pastimes. Forget all your preconceptions, this festival isn't about sitting shoulder to shoulder with spotty teenagers or socially inept 30-somethings, it's a celebration of the multi-billion pound industry.

While this year's festival is a touch more modest than in previous years - perhaps due to that whole 'recession' thing - there's still plenty to see and do. So strap on a good pair of walking shoes and be prepared to learn a whole lot at these eye-opening events.

London MCM Expo
24th - 15th October
£10/£13
Excel Centre

The London movie, comic and media expo is a showcase for all the latest in, uh, movies, comics and media. But it also has a hefty games section. To 'celebrate' the London Games Festival, the MCM Expo will unveil a life-sized Warthog vehicle from the Halo video games. If you already know what a Warthog is, order your tickets now.

If you don't there's still plenty to keep your dusty thumbs very busy. Sega will be there showing its latest wares - yes Sega still exists, it still makes good games. Activision, the second-largest games publisher ever, will also be on hand to demonstrate its upcoming titles, as well as Namco, Ubisoft and Capcom. See what's new and find yourself impressed.

And once you've had enough of the gaming, there's a slew of TV and movie stars signing their glossy photographed faces, previews of upcoming films, Q&As and the odd competition. Get yourself down to London's Excel Centre. Booking details can be found here.

Eurogamer Expo

As one of the leading online gaming magazines, Eurogamer knows how to put on an expo. So much so, that you'll have the chance to play every major, and not-all-that-major, new title due to hit the shelves in the next six to 12 months. Even if gaming isn't your thing, for £6 you can keep up with your nephew for once and maybe find something you didn't know you liked. Left 4 Dead 2 anyone? Yes please. For a full list of the games on display, check this out.

Playful
30th October

25 Red Lion Square, WC1R

Gaming isn't just about wiggling your thumbs until you throw your controller across the room in frustration, it's a continually evolving medium with an envelope so heavily pushed it's falling over. Playful is a one-day event aimed at exploring what it means to 'game' - from the different ways we're challenged in media to how gaming has become far more mainstream in recent years. Go on, admit it, you don't like games but you enjoyed playing on the Wii that time.

MaxFactor's Pat McGrath backstage at Issa on recreating the Issa look

It's not just the clothes that get us all excited at London Fashion Week - it's also the elaborate hair and make up which set the look for forthcoming beauty trends.

So t5m caught up with MaxFactor Creative Director and international make up guru, Pat McGrath backstage at Issa, as she prepared the likes of Naomi Campbell and Chanel Iman for their catwalk moment.

The Issa collection was inspired by a tropical storm - think deep greens, rich golds, molten metallics and blacks and greys - and Pat transferred this theme into the make up, with heavy, rich eye colour, sweeping black eyeliner and thick, dramatic eyelashes. Pat has been using MaxFactor 'Lash Effect' mascara, which she credits with creating the false eyelash effect on her models! She then compliments this eye make up with a simple 'melon' shade of nude and shimmering lip gloss.Pat even gives us tips on how to recreate this dramatic look at home - advising us to go easy on the eyeliner, but to experiment with colour!

Asked to pick out her favourite trend from the shows so far, and Pat is torn between the romantic look we've seen at Louise Goldin and Jasper Conran, and the more, edgy and powerful looks at House of Holland and Issa herself...

Issa is always a packed out show - famed for its glamorous, flamboyant and memorable pieces - and this year is no exception, so t5m caught up with the woman behind it all, Daniella Helayel.

Daniella jokes that she wishes she could sit in the front row of her shows and admire all of her hardwork, rather than standing in the back and making sure all the models are dressed!

We managed to spot some fabulous colours whilst we were backstage - including lots of blacks, whites and gunmetals - as well as more tropical yellows and greens - Daniella explains that her inspiration for this season was the Grace Jones track, Hurricane, and that she wanted to create a hurricane effect collection.

And, with Naomi Campbell and Chanel Iman modelling, Daniella has certainly whipped up a storm.

Day five of London Fashion Week sees Burberry return to the London runway along with Erderm and Basso and Brooke

Drawing the womenswear element of London Fashion Week to a close, day 5 saw designers going all out in terms of shapes, fabrics and inspirations in a bid to impress the plethora of editors, celebrities and buyers that have graced the capital this season.

First up was the quintessentially British Amanda Wakeley, who showed a typically elegant collection of molten metallic dresses in shades of gold, silver, cinammon and copper. A total contrast to the 'coming of age' theme to Basso & Brooke's show, which saw the Brazilian/English design duo send their models down the runway in draped body-con dresses, with futuristic prints inspired by Jeff Koons.

Erdem wowed the crowds with their Japanese inspired floral prints, with mandarin collars and crisp whites - all immaculately tailored with toned down make up.

Of course, the real star of the evening was Burberry's return to London Fashion Week - which saw the likes of Victoria Beckham, Anna Wintour and Agyness Deyn take to the front row. Mixing their heritage pieces with futuristic silvers, lilacs and shimmer - the Burberry show confirmed why London Fashion Week is still going strong after 25 years.

Qasimi goes all Arabian Nights for London Fashion Week

Three hours sleep did nothing to keep me from my front-row Qasimi seat in New Oxford Street, this sunny Sunday morning of the 25th year of London Fashion Week.

Qasimi is a label that has grown in my good books since I was hooked from their first show (see my review here) at LFW this time last year.

This time around, the spectacle once again made my hurting head spin and my goodie-bag spoilt lips grin.

Shoulders and hip details stood out on almost every piece to create statuesque sillouettes of golden warrior goddesses. The crowd swooned and swayed as floaty, Arabic style trousers and all-in-ones, hardened by leather bodices and statement horizontally-spiking shoulders, strutted in front of us to the sounds of some seamlessly mixed dirty house from DJ Dom T.

The embellishments on everything - the gorgeous golden leather capes, the ridiculously lovely red dress, the cinch-waisted superhero jacket would have made an emperor weep. Dazzling and daring, but completely party-possible, the designer of these delights is Khalid Al-Qasimi, who was in demand backstage as the creations were lovingly wrapped up and non-crust sandwiches were scoffed.

I'm completely in love with the boot-gloves - soft suede, jewel-encrusted triumphs that transform the plainest shoe into a dream. I would fight She-Ra for the golden jacket below and would happily wear every single piece - Qasimi makes me see how over-rated simplicity is and I want it all. Now.

Issa, Vivienne Westwood, Naomi Campbell and Antonio Berardi all shine on super Sunday at London Fashion Week

Known to fashion-insiders as super Sunday - yesterday London Fashion Week was all about the big names, luxe designs and memorable catwalk shows.

Vivienne Westwood's Red Label drew an A-list crowd - with everyone from Sarah Harding of Girls Aloud to Joss Stone and Tracy Emin in the front row. The collection was traditionally British - with bold reds, blues and whites in oversized fabrics, high waisted trousers and draping dresses. We're also pretty sure we spotted some of Vivienne's signature horns as well...

Next up was Antonio Berardi's culture clash - which combined the discipline of Saville Row tailoring, with the off-beat colour of Sicilian life - with lots of corsets, structured skirts and layers of fabric.

Bringing miserable London a taste of a Brazillian summer, Issa was full of colourful floor length gowns in daring cuts and colours - with none other than Naomi Campbell walking the catwalk, along with emerging star, Chanel Iman. Issa revealed that her collection was inspired by Rio de Janiero beaches and the work of Yves Saint Laurent - hence the brilliant colours and rich fabrics.

Richard Nicoll bought some fringe benefits to the week - with his tribal influence collection accessorised with flapper-esque fringing - even on the earrings! He even added some girlie bows to the mix - and proved to us all why he is highly regarded as British fashion's one to watch!

Mark Fast causes a stir, John Rocha packs out the BFC tent and PPQ make history at day two of London Fashion Week

So London Fashion Week continues in the same stylish vein - with Saturday seeing both new and established names showing their Spring/Summer collections as part of LFW's 25th anniversary.

Canadian designer Mark Fast was all icy blues, shocking reds and neutral beiges in the first show of the day - with cut out knitwear and unforgiving body-con cuts. But, it wasn't all about the clothes, as Mark also used two plus sized models in his show, a response to the recent open letter from UK Vogue editor, Alexandra Shulman decrying the size of sample cuts, perhaps? He received raptuous applause both for his choice in casting and his impeccably cut and thoughtful collection.

Kinder Aggugini based his collection on the Brothers Grimm fairytales, with an innocence vs. evil motif running through the collection - think spiked heels and blonde ringlets! The stand out piece was by far his snakeskin dresses and his Queen of Hearts black and white dress, complete with oversized top hat.

London Fashion Week stalwart, Margaret Howell, packed out her front row with the most influential names in the game with her traditional 'British Summer' collection of panama hats, breton stripes, crumbled linens and even a few bare midriffs!

Bringing day two to a close was design duo Amy Molyneaux and Percy Parker's PPQ - the label of choice for IT girls including Alice Dellal, Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe (who all modelled last seasons collection) - with their 80's prints, sixties make up and garish colours. But even more importantly, the pair made fashion history by using all black models in their show, a first for LFW.

What a day! Tomorrow we see Matthew Williamson and the divine Vivienne Westwood!

Caroline Charles, Eun Jeong and Bora Aksu all kick start London Fashion Week's 25th anniversary

London Fashion Week's 25th anniversary has kicked off in style - with an opening ceremony at London's historic Somerset House hosted by Erin O'Connor and a very enthusiastic Boris Johnson.

Caroline Charles went girly and frothy with frilled bikinis and polka dots - along with tropical prints and a fantastic soundtrack. Eun Jeong followed suit with an equally feminine collection entirely of white, with soft fabrics and loose cuts.

Bora Aksu bought some much more solid glamour to proceedings, with waist cinching shapes, deep pinks and golds and lots of sequins. Which provided a real contrast to the final show of the day, Emilio de Morena. This was a dreamy collection of pale pinks, whites and creams in fluid fabrics and thigh skimming cuts.

So, the end of day one and it seems we will be saying a thorough goodbye to the overt sexuality of this A/W with it's fur, shoulder pads and thigh high boots, and will instead be ushering in a summer of pastel colours, flowing fabrics and loose cuts!

Up and coming fashion heavy weight Brian Reyes, who has previously worked with Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta, bought a fresh - faced, classic and casual feel to this season's New York City Fashion Week.

Denim shorts with white cotton bodices were paired with casual pumps and espadrilles, and loose fitting silk tunics were splattered with simple prints, along with feminine ruffles and a small serving of creams and pearls. He wrapped his models in over sized navy cardigans, and mini camel trench coats - with just one evening gown - simple, floor length and black.

TRESemmé StyleSeeker | Day 7 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

Day seven of New York City Fashion Week and the mood was still as upbeat, colourful and fresh as day one. Michael Kors sent his models down the runway in deep turquoises, shimmering lilacs and a rainbow of pastel shades - with loose fitting chunky knits and casual shorts.

Nanette Lepore followed suit, with an Indian summer colour palette of rich teals and deep pinks, tempered with classic, sleeveless shirts and espadrille-esque shoes.

But it wasn't all bohemian louche, 3.1 Phillip Lim injected some old school glamour into the day - with deep cream suits, purple ruffle traousers and black satin suits all accompanied with vertiginous heels, high maintenance hair and pristine makeup.

By far the stand - out show was Brazillian Alexandre Herchcovitch's multi-coloured, voluminous and circus-like collection, which saw huge padded shoulders, high - waisted structured skirts and over sized zips in the brightest shades of lime green, sunshine yellow and pillar-box red.

What a brilliant way to end a brilliant New York City Fashion Week - we're already looking forward to the next one!

London Fashion Week arrives - welcoming back Christopher Bailey, Antonio Berardi, Matthew Williamson and Jonathon Saunders.

After months of speculation, preparation and gradually building London-related fash-pack hysteria, London Fashion Week is finally upon us! With designer, celebrity and even political support at an all-time high for the 25th anniversary of the event, our fine capital is this place du jour for every fashion forward celebrity, editor and gossip hound in town. Christopher Bailey and the iconic British fashion institution Burberry are back in town, as are Matthew Williamson, Jonathan Saunders and Antonio Berardi. Not only that, but one of the hottest tickets, not just in London but across the fashion weeks, is set to be the Christopher Kane show, sure to attract A-listers and top editors from around the world. And with a born and bred Brit as the presumed fashion king of the season, it’s a proud moment for London fashion.

Of course, there might be a lot riding on this week, but London has always shocked, surprised and excited the fashion and showbiz world. Vivienne Westwood’s Harris Tweed collection in 1986, featuring tartan, corsetry and crowns, gave everyone a reason to channel the Very British Upper Class. The same year, royals and politicians graced the front row, with Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher in the audience. Pam Hogg, another British fashion eccentric, rebelled against the fledging Nineties aesthetic in 1991 by parading her models down the catwalk in tight bodysuits.

And let’s not forget – London designers certainly know how to put on a show: think Hussein Chalayan and his wooden skirt-table and Alexander McQueen, who had model of the moment Shalom Harlow and her beautiful dress paint-sprayed by robots, much to the audience’s delight. And the showmanship wasn’t just kept to the Nineties, last year saw Giles Deacon send his models out in fantastic dresses, complete with Pacman headgear. And Gareth Pugh showed us all that fashion can be walking installation art with collection’s featuring everything from Donnie Darko scary-bunny style costumes to dressing models to look like extras from Lord of the Rings. So who knows what this year will bring?

So, follow us for all the hottest fashion shows, presentations and gossip - you can find your daily round ups here.

Martha Wainwright to collaborate with Christopher Wheeldon

Martha Wainwright has recently followed up her performance in Will Tuckett's Seven Deadly Sins at the Royal Opera House with a collabortaion with Christopher Wheeldon's Morphoses company.

The new ballet, Tears of Saint Lawrence, with music by Ms. Wainwright and choreography by Wheeldon and Edwaard Liang, had its world premiere in New York's Central Park last month.

The tears of St. Lawerence are traditionally known as the meteor showers that may occur on St. Lawerence's Day.

"In both voice and music, her span includes country and blues; and her singing has sometimes a chesty blues intensity, sometimes youthful country innocence, with ascents into falsetto half-voice ... This is singing that relies on a marked use of mannerism. But it's also real singing, in which the voice itself, musically, is often very affecting," reports The New York Times.

"Charmingly assured and no-nonsense, the blond Ms. Wainwright delivered song upon song. When she was not leading her musicians in her own songs, she led them in number ranging from Vaughan Williams to Annie Lennox."

The ballet ended with Ms. Wainwright and the dancers each extending an arm diagonally to the sky, holding a star.

The very best of London Fashion Week

The credit crunch was no-where to be seen at London Fashion Week this season.

At a time when many markets are feeling the pinch, this week showed that fashion is stronger than ever.

For one whirlwind week in September, the whole city buzzed with excitement and there were smiles all round.

A far cry from the sombre mood of Autumn Winter ‘08, this London Fashion Week certainly kept its chin up. This was reflected in the trends, with bright pastels providing a breath of fresh air.

The week was buzzing with speculation over London’s schedule being cut to just four days in February. The ‘Daily’ cued a collective sigh of relief as it was announced that next year would run at five days.

PPQ kicked off the week with a playful collection of micro-shorts and mini dresses in bright sorbet colours. The front row was scattered with London’s brightest young things.

On Day Two we caught up with Paul Smith after his show at Claridges, where he told us that the credit crunch wasn’t denting his profits, and he was opening up new stores around the world.

On Day Three Erin O’Connor was holding court on the runway before the Christopher Kane show.

A real design highlight came from masters of print Basso and Brooke, on Day 4.
Their S/S collection showed intricate, origami inspired pattern cutting.

The grand-dame of British fashion Vivienne Westwood pulled in the A-list crowd on Thursday, everyone from Kate Moss to Pamela Anderson attended. Vivienne’s signature draping and tailoring was carried down the runway in style by familiar faces Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe, and model of the moment Jourdan Dunn

The Issa show brought out the big guns backstage and front row. Pat McGrath did the makeup and Edward Enninful styled he show. The front row was peppered with princesses along with a posse of Delalls and English rose Rosamund Pike.

Naomi Campbell’s appearance on the runway stole the show and lent Daniella’s collection that extra-special something.

The Off schedule shows are such a big part of London Fashion Week, and shows like Steve J & Yoni P, Felder Felder and Qasimi represented what London is famous for, new and exciting design talent.

London showed that fashion’s spirits are far from crushed. Roll on February!!!

Todd Lynn spoke to us backstage after his fantastically received collection of women's tailored pieces.
Showcasing collection of designer Luella & Marios Schwab along with Simon Kogler on day 2 of London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week gets into full swing, and Day Two is far from a mundane Monday. Luella led the way in the morning with a flurry of purple, pink and orange in a collection dominated by tweed and lace.

Marios Schwab then presented a beautiful collection at the TOPSHOP venue. Precisely cut garments were accented by oversized soft copper bangles and ropes.

We spoke to the designer backstage, even though he was feeling a little ill! He talked to us about the aesthetic he's developed over the years. Duffy did the hair, and told us backstage that 'Marios absolutely killed it this season'.

Later in the afternoon we caught up with TV presenter Louise Roe for a spot of trend predicting and a run down on the shows so far. The finale of the day was Paul Smith, who showed a quintessentially British collection that gave a strong nod to the East. Click here to watch our great backstage interview with Paul.

The excitement, the collections, the new designers and the old guard; t5m's predictions and anticipations for the imminent 2008 London Fashion Week...

On the weekend of the 13th and 14th September, expect a rare warm front to build over London heading in from New York. Lasting all week and well into the evenings, watch out for some lightening; London’s young talent is electric after all. A slight breeze should help to keep one’s cool for Spring Summer '09, before moving south to Milan and finally whisking its way north to Paris. Yes, it's Fashion Week time again.

As autumn’s golden leaves begin to fall and summer’s evenings become shrouded in darkness, fashion continues the warmer season’s theme on the catwalks in New York, London, Milan and Paris this month. With a jam-packed schedule of shows, presentations and parties, this September is fashion overdose.

The Natural History Museum has morphed from being swamped by hundreds of school children on their holidays to the banging away of builders constructing London's main fashion week venue. Here’s a sneaky preview of what to look out for both on and off the catwalk. For a city famed for its edgy creativity and originality, London can sometimes be seen as being less of a commercial fashion centre then 'big bucks' New York and moneyed Milan. Yet London seems to be keeping a grasp of its big name talents season after season these days. When Luella showed at Claridges a couple of seasons ago, fashionistas thought it was a one hit wonder in celebration of the opening of her store on Brook Street. But good things come in threes and Luella will again treat London to her vision for the warmer months of 2009.

Vivienne Westwood showed her Red Label last season to celebrate a memorable anniversary in London and she's returning to town, no doubt to a star studded front row and model line-up.

Look out for a suitably sporty morning on the Tuesday of fashion week as Stella McCartney presents her Adidas collection. Better shape up soon!

The established old guard will be fully represented. Paul Smith, Aquascutum, Margaret Howell, John Rocha, Betty Jackson and Nicole Farhi will all preview their collections next to London’s current young stars. Look out for Marios Schwab, Christopher Kane, Richard Nicoll, House of Holland, Erdem, Duro Olowu and Giles, all of whom will be closely watched by buyers and press from around the world, monitoring their progress season by season.

Mulberry goes from one great step to the next. With the departure of Creative Director Stuart Vevers recently for Milan, ladies everywhere were wondering who would be at the helm of delivering such treats as the Bayswater and the Roxanne. Fear not girls; Emma Hill, the accessories superstar who has fine-tuned herself for the job in hand at the likes of Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein and Gap will host a presentation on the Wednesday of Fashion Week. We’ll also be hoping to see a further foray into footwear from shoe superstar Jonathan Kelsey in the shape of his new collection for Mulberry.

Now onto the new names to watch from the On schedule, the on|off shows and Off Schedule shows. London will be awash with new talent this September. Tongues are already wagging and we'll be tipping you off as to who to watch out for Spring Summer 2009.

Of particular note is Peter Pilotto to, showing on schedule for the first time. This will be the third collection from Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos who graduated from the renowned Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Their last collection was rich in layering and deep in colour - who knows what we’ll see this time around.

MeadhamandKirchhoff is the brainchild of St. Martin’s graduates Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff. Formally trained in Menswear, their collection is expected to be heavy in denim but with a couture focus infused with lace, folds and zips. It sounds better than a summer pudding.

On the accessories front, Nazar Mazhar is a 25-year-old hatter whose designs would sit happily in a gallery as well as one's coiffured bouffant. This former hairdresser’s pieces have graced the heads of Kylie and Madonna - claim yours now!

Check in soon for part II of the Fashion Week Forecast.

Day 3 at London Fashion Week with Aquascutum, Todd Lynn and PPQ

Day 3 saw the likes of Aquascutum, Todd Lynn and PPQ take to the catwalks to unveil their A/W collections.

The day kicked off with the Aquascutum show, self inspired and quintessentially British. Next, Todd Lynn talks leather and super skinny trousers in his collection based on iconic religions of the world. Last but by no means least, we went down to the Burlington Arcade to watch Alice Dellal and pals strut their stuff for Percy and Amy at the PPQ show, exquisitely based on their 'make do and mend' theme. What's more, we got a sneak preview of the Jackdaw Store, the design duo's first of many pop-up stores!
