Barren Earth
Our Twilight (EP)
Peaceville Records

Scandinavian bands have stepped up in the metal world the past few years. The latest addition is Finnish group Barren Earth. Comprised of former members of Amorphis and current members of Swallow the Sun, Moonsorrow and Kreator, the newly formed band is set to release its EP, Our Twilight, Nov. 9 (EU; Nov. 11 for Finland; Nov. 17 for U.S.). The four-track EP is a taste of what is to come in early 2010, when the six-man group is set to release their debut full-length album.

The progressive metal rockers deliver with growling vocals and great guitar riffs, but the drums aren’t as biting as the vocals would indicate they should be. Seems odd to have brutal vocals mixed with softer instrumentals, but that’s where the progressive tendencies step in. Mixed with often psychedelic-sounding guitar parts and sweeping, epic keyboard melodies, Twilight isn’t completely metal, although it does lean more toward that in this EP.

Twilight has potential. Stay tuned to find out if next year’s album brings more brutality like the title track or if the melodic melody - as heard in the tune “Jewel” - wins out overall for this newly minted act’s sound.
